Be Real Secures the Bag. Gaming Company from france acquisition at 500 million

Acquisition AnnouncementVoodoo, the renowned mobile game publisher, has made a significant move into the social media space by acquiring BeReal, the self-proclaimed "Gen Z social network," for a huge chunk of cash 0$541 million. This acquisition, announced on Monday, brings together two Paris-based tech companies and marks Voodoo's most notable foray into social networking beyond its existing portfolio of apps like Wemoms. BeReal, known for its unique daily notification model prompting users to share authentic moments, will leverage Voodoo's expertise and technologies to further its mission of fostering genuine online connections.

BeReal's Journey

BeReal initially gained attention with its refreshing take on social media, eschewing likes and followers for a space focused on real, unfiltered sharing. Founded in 2019, the app saw significant growth and user loyalty, especially among Gen Z users seeking an alternative to the curated and filtered content prevalent on platforms like Instagram. However, as the novelty of its daily notification model wore off, BeReal experienced a huge nosedive of active users, with a reported 61% drop between October 2022 and March 2023. Despite having around 40 million active users, the platform was in need of a new strategy and resources to reignite its growth and fulfill its potential. And they needed it quick, as the consensus was “Bereal is a feature, not a product”

Future Outlook with Voodoo Acquistion

BeReal will have the support to scale and evolve while maintaining its core mission. Alexandre Yazdi, Voodoo's CEO, expressed excitement about combining their teams and expertise to establish BeReal as the go-to social network for authenticity. Aymeric Roffé, current CEO of Voodoo's Wizz app, will take the helm at BeReal, with outgoing CEO Alexis Barreyat remaining on board. While BeReal has faced challenges in sustaining its initial momentum, this acquisition positions it for a new chapter of growth and innovation in the competitive social media landscape.
